One of Schoten's warmest Christmas scenes once again played out under the canopy of Ciconia restaurant. In the run-up to Christmas Eve, 220 Schoten residents who were tight on money came there to collect a box full of goodies and presents so that they and their families could also enjoy a festive evening.

Rudy Eller (50) is one of the Schoten residents who came to register with Said Djibet and co on Wednesday morning. “Due to my disability and subsequent problems with the taxman, I am currently going through a difficult period. I have run out of money. I am alone and for a long time it seemed to be a sad Christmas Eve. But thanks to this action, I will at least be able to enjoy a festive meal. I am really amazed at the kindness of these people.

‘These people’ those are, in the first place, hospitality entrepreneur Saïd Djibet of brasserie Ciconia and catering De Smaak and his equally committed girlfriend Jeanine Hoogstrate, the Belgian representative of the Princess Maxima Children's Cancer Fund.

“We are also working with Chrisje Smet of social grocer Apple & Egg this year. “We manage a file of 353 Schoten residents who are demonstrably very tight on money. We gave them the chance to sign up for this Christmas promotion in collaboration with the local middle class. Never have so many boxes gone out the door as today: 220. Our action is becoming a tradition, but this figure unfortunately proves that Schoten certainly does not escape impoverishment.”

“We are doing it for the fourth time now,” says initiator Said. “Our kitchen team prepared a turkey roast with winter garnish, accompanied by Scotch croquettes from Kelderman. The big box was further filled with donations from numerous other sponsors. They all made a nice contribution, allowing the recipients to enjoy a real feast.”

This Christmas action Ciconia and Appel & Ei was possible thanks to the cooperation of Jiv (sauces), Altoni-Kelderman (croquettes), Maurice Mathieu (party salad), Slagerij Gysels Brasschaat (turkey roast), Spadel (water), Pain d'Anvers (cherry stalk - smoothie), Bakker Dellafaille (cake), Serax (candles), Ciconia (tapas, soup and main course), Be Living (packaging), Double Dutch (bottle of tonic), Pauwels (tomato sauce and mayonnaise), Delhaize ‘s-Gravenwezel (crisps) Aura (perfume) and Hupple (kibble for dogs and cats).
